Living in indigenous communities

Teaching English Indigenous communities, Napo Province

Volunteers will arrive in Tena, the capital of the Napo Province, is an attractive and quiet city in the Amazon rainforest. Known as the “cinnamon capital" of Ecuador, and originally founded by missionary explorers, Tena is a popular launching point for jungle, kayaking and rafting tours in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest region. The entry to the city is marked by a statue of the indigenous hero Jumandy, who courageously led an uprising against the Spanish colonizers in 1578, and was subsequently executed.

The communities where the volunteers will be working to improve the education are located close to Tena: Bajo Ongota (85 children), Ponce Loma (35 children), Kuyaloma (68 children), Shandia (45 children) & Bajo Talag (36 children). All of them are small indigenous villages; each community has its own public school.

Accommodation is with a local host family. As well as a great cultural introduction to the region, staying with your hosts benefits the local economy.

The climate is surprisingly comfortable due to its elevation at 500m above sea level. There's rainfall year-round, with an annual average of 171.65 inches (4,359.91 mm).

Afternoons and weekends are free to explore the surrounding area.
