Living in Santa Rosa

Santa Rosa & communities around Tena, Napo Province

Santa Rosa is a small Amazonian community surrounded by a natural reserve and a National Park. It’s location on the edge of the rainforest and under the shadows of the Andes is truly spectacular and it’s easy to see why tourism is becoming an important element of the local economy.

Accommodation in Santa Rosa is with a local host family. As well as a great cultural introduction to the region, staying with your hosts benefits the local economy.

Afternoons and weekends are free to explore the surrounding area. Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve is a high Andean paramo zone where condors are commonly seen. Sumaco-Napo-Galeras National Park Tumbles down from the Andes to the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon. Giant armadillos, bears, deer, ocelots, peccaries and jaguars make their way quietly through the sub tropical jungle while parakeets chatter noisily in the tree-tops. There is simply nothing to describe how incredibly untouched this precious wildlife refuge is.

The town of Tena is the provincial capital and here you can dip back into more mainstream living as a break from your teaching duties, furthermore, for the adventurous, there is white water rafting and for the indulgent, there are hot springs.
