Living in La Bocana de Ostiones

Teaching English Indigenous communities, Napo Province

La Bocana de Ostiones is a magic place located in the Northwest Coast of Ecuador, 30 miles northeast of Esmeraldas city, 200 miles northwest of Quito.

Ostiones is a low altitude site reaching from sea level up to 30 meters. The climate is warm and humid, with temperatures ranging between 25 and 28 ºC and an average annual rainfall of 900-2500 mm. The community has an Afro-Ecuadorian population of about 300 people, local income is mainly from fishing, the shrimp industry & agriculture, many have to travel to the cities to find work. Ostiones suffers greatly from poverty and one of the main barriers to its development is the lack of potable water and provision of basic health and education. ETV is actually implementing a water supply project and a health medical center to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants.

Nuevo Mundo School has 45 students. It is settled only 5 minutes walking from the volunteer house.

A unique pristine and solitary beach bathes the coasts of the community which is only visited by ETV volunteers and locals. Children go to swim everyday!
